It was the wish of Karl Gouder’s family that the Partit Nazzjonalista goes ahead with the organisation of the activities related to the 60th anniversary of Independence. These events will commemorate the memory of Karl.
During a press conference this morning, the Partit Nazzjonalista’s General Secretary, Michael Piccinino, announced that while the Party had been about to cancel all the original activities linked to these celebrations following Karl’s passing, it was his relatives who encouraged the Partit Nazzjonalista to go ahead with the commemoration of Independence through the events that Karl himself had been planning.
It would also certainly have been Karl’s wish that the work continues. The theme of this year’s PN Independence activities is ’il quddiem (Going Forward).
Programme of events
The Partit Nazzjonalista’s Executive Secretary, Stefan Caruana, explained that the activities will begin on Wednesday, 18th September, with a discussion at Pjazza Tritoni at 7:30pm. Taking part in this discussion will be the Leader of the Partit Nazjonalista Bernard Grech, along with Michael Galea, Joe Farrugia, Ġorġ Mallia, Marisa Xuereb and Daniel Vella Fondacaro. The discussion will be moderated by Louise Tedesco.
Following the discussion, an evening event will be held to celebrate the memory of Karl Gouder, with the contribution of several local singers.
There will be a dedicated children’s zone as well as a cycling activity, in memory of how much Karl loved sports and prioritised such spaces.
On Thursday, 19th September, also at Pjazza Tritoni, Times of Malta journalist Mark Laurence Zammit will interview the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Bernard Grech. Following this, there will be a variety show on the central stage.
On Friday, 20th September, the activities will culminate with a Mass Meeting at Pjazza Tritoni at 7.00pm. Speakers at this meeting will include the Partit Nazzjonalista’s General Secretary Michael Piccinino, and Party Leader Bernard Grech.
After the Mass Meeting, there will be further performances from several Maltese singers on the main stage.
At midnight, the event will close with the raising of the Maltese flag.
On Sunday, 22nd September, two shooting events which have now become synonymous with these celebrations will take place one at the Bidnija Range and the other at the Ta’ Kandja Range.
On Monday, 23rd September, the rottArti exhibition will open, featuring the participation of 77 Maltese artists who will be exhibiting their work at Dar Ċentrali until the 6th of October.
On Saturday, 28th September at 9:30am at Dar Ċentrali, the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Bernard Grech, will address an event being organized for senior citizens.
Commemorative Coin
To continue marking the 60th anniversary of Independence, the Partit Nazzjonalista has decided to commemorate this day with a special coin for the occasion.
The coin will be gold-plated and will feature Ġorġ Borg Olivier on one side and the first coat of arms of Independent Malta on the other. There will be a limited number of these coins, which will be available for purchase from Dar Ċentrali.
The Partit Nazzjonalista, through whose efforts our country gained Independence 60 years ago, is today presenting the way forward for the next 60 years. It will do so during the Independence activities and through the rest of its work.
Our country needs a different direction, and the Partit Nazzjonalista is more committed than ever to providing it. This was certainly also Karl’s wish.
